  • The guide spoke extremely slowly. [The adverb extremely modifies the adverb slowly, telling to what extent the guide spoke slowly.]
  • The bird was chirping outside. [where] 
  • The bird chirped today. [when] 
  • The bird chirped loudly. [how] 
  • The bird never chirped. [to what extent]
